We are already well into the New Year 2020. Already there is news news news. We are in the midst of so much turmoil that it can be hard to handle, and we can get overwhelmed. There is all the political news, including impeachment and election primaries, the impacts of climate change which is manifesting more and more quickly, health issues on a global scale, Brexit, autocrats showing up all over the world.

The corruption in our current US administration is unbelievably widespread. Every day we hear more and more about corruption and abuse of power. I know people who are either turning off the news, or yelling at the TV or computer, or a combination of both. Then there are all the personal concerns, such as finances, friends and family dying, or an emotional or relationship issues. So what do we do?

We cannot depend on the outside world to provide things that we need.

There is the realization that we cannot depend on the outside world to provide things that we need. So many people are re-prioritizing what is important to them, and turning to their internal selves, to make their personal spirituality a part of their grounding.

So it’s important that we define or re-define ourselves. Feeling solid within ourselves can ground us no matter what is going on out there. That doesn’t mean not experiencing emotions or that we won’t have upheaval in our lives. It does mean that we can get back to who we are even in the midst of external and internal upsets.

Spiritual connection takes attention, especially in stressful times.

But I have found that spiritual connection is like a lot of things in life – it takes attention, and even consistent attention, especially in stressful times. The stress takes the form of doubt and worry and seems to take over everything. Then that becomes our reality, and we give it seniority. So we have to push it aside and develop another habit of attention to spiritual connection and even develop faith.

Learning to meditate, for example, is not something that just happens; it is an acquired skill, acquired through practice and attention. We need to practice, with some consistency, on a regular basis.

We can separate from all the stuff happening “out there.”

This practice, though, creates spiritual connection, which in turn allows us to feel solid within ourselves, which then allows us to have our own personal grounding. Then we can separate from all the stuff happening “out there” if we don’t want it to get into our space. We can also more easily handle our own personal lives with a more even keel, even if there is upheaval personally. That’s because we can stay in communication within ourselves and trust that communication, no matter what.

In the creed of the Church of Natural Grace, it says:

“To understand and to manifest our inherent freedom is to affirm and accept life. It is through inner communication that we discover awareness. Through the attainment of true communication, we set ourselves free.” And later on, “The Kingdom of God is within you. This is our perspective.”

This is a wonderful perspective to have when dealing with stress and overwhelm. We can get out of that stress by getting back into communication with ourselves, which includes the God of our own Heart. We can separate from the stress. We get re-centered and re-grounded.

This is a worthwhile practice. It can apply to everything in our lives, external or internal, political or emotional or financial. Our own spiritual connection is a wonderful gift, especially in these trying times.

As always, thanks for supporting Psychic Horizons & the Church of Natural Grace with your sustainable giving! It truly makes a difference, both for us and for you.

Best regards,
Rev. Laura Hopper
